Our Commitment to
Sustainability and the Environment

From local sourcing and zero-waste practices to charitable giving, environmental stewardship is built into every stage of our business.

As an Ontario-based, commission-free retailer, National Mattress embeds environmental responsibility into every stage of how we operate — from sourcing and manufacturing to delivery, returns, and charitable giving. We believe that selling quality mattresses and protecting the environment are not competing goals. They go hand in hand.

Every mattress we sell is brand new and factory sealed, backed by a full manufacturer's warranty. When a mattress is returned or exchanged, we refuse to send it to landfill. Instead, we donate, recycle, or resell it as part of our Open-Bag collection. The result is that 100% of National Mattress products avoid landfill, keeping bulky waste out of Canadian disposal sites.

Our Zero-Waste Commitment

The mattress industry generates an enormous amount of waste. A single discarded mattress can take up to 23 cubic feet in a landfill and take decades to decompose. At National Mattress, we have built our operations so that no product we sell ends up in a disposal site. Here is how we handle every scenario.

💛

Donate

Gently used mattresses from returns and exchanges are donated to vetted charities, shelters, and newcomer-support organisations across Ontario.

Recycle

All packaging materials — plastic film, cardboard, and wooden pallets — are sent to certified recycling facilities rather than landfill.

🏷

Resell as Open-Bag

Returned and display mattresses that pass inspection are professionally sanitised and resold through our Open-Bag collection at deep discounts.

Open-Bag Mattresses: Save Money and Help the Planet

Our Open-Bag collection is one of the most tangible ways we reduce waste. By extending the lifecycle of premium mattresses that would otherwise require additional resources to remake, we keep quality products in circulation and out of landfill. Open-Bag items include showroom displays, photo-shoot samples, and customer returns — all professionally inspected, sanitised, and backed by a full manufacturer's warranty.

Every Open-Bag mattress is grade-checked for structural integrity. There are no dips, no stains, and no compromises on quality. You save up to 60% off retail while helping reduce the environmental footprint of the mattress industry.

"100% of National Mattress products avoid landfill. When a mattress is returned, we donate it, recycle its packaging, or resell it as open-bag inventory. That is not just good business — it is the right thing to do."

Local Sourcing and Low-Carbon Logistics

All mattress factories we partner with are located in the Greater Toronto Area. Short supply chains are one of the most effective ways to reduce the environmental impact of product delivery, and they benefit our customers directly as well. Here is what local sourcing means in practice.

🍃

Smaller Carbon Footprint

Shorter truck routes between our manufacturing partners and warehouses mean significantly fewer greenhouse-gas emissions compared to retailers who import from overseas or across the continent.

💰

Lower Transport Costs

Fuel savings from short delivery distances are passed directly to our customers as competitive pricing. Local logistics help us keep mattresses affordable without cutting corners.

Faster Lead Times

Most orders leave the factory and reach our warehouse within days, not weeks. This means faster delivery to your door and less time your mattress spends in transit.

🇨

Supporting Canadian Jobs

By purchasing from Canadian manufacturers, we create and sustain local jobs across manufacturing, logistics, and retail while strengthening domestic supply chains.

Quality and Ethical Standards

Sustainability means nothing without quality. Every factory partner we work with must meet strict environmental and safety standards that protect both our customers and the planet. These are not optional guidelines — they are requirements for doing business with National Mattress.

Standard Industry Typical National Mattress Requirement
Foam certification Varies by manufacturer CertiPUR-US certified — low VOC, no harmful chemicals
Wood sourcing Often unspecified Responsibly sourced wood for foundations and bases
Production equipment Standard efficiency Energy-efficient equipment and recycling protocols
Health standards Minimum compliance Meets or exceeds Health Canada standards
Packaging diversion No target 90% diverted — targeting 100% by 2027

Continuous Improvement and Transparency

We audit our waste diversion rate annually and are always looking for ways to do better. Sustainability is not a destination — it is an ongoing commitment. Here is where we stand today and where we are heading.

📦

90% Packaging Diversion

Nine out of ten packaging components are currently diverted from landfill through recycling. Our goal is to reach 100% packaging diversion by 2027.

🚚

Under 60 km Average Delivery

The average distance from our factory partners to our warehouse is less than 60 kilometres, keeping transport emissions and costs as low as possible.

💛

1,200+ Mattresses Donated

Since 2020, we have donated over 1,200 mattresses to Canadian charities, shelters, and newcomer-support organisations across Ontario.

🎯

100% Landfill Avoidance

Every single mattress that passes through National Mattress is either sold, donated, recycled, or resold as open-bag inventory. None go to landfill.

How You Can Help

Sustainability is a team effort. There are a few simple things you can do as a customer to reduce the environmental impact of your mattress and help us in our mission to keep bulky waste out of Canadian landfills.

🚚

Choose Local Delivery Windows

Selecting a standard delivery window helps us group routes efficiently, reducing the number of extra truck runs and lowering emissions.

🛡

Use a Mattress Protector

A quality protector keeps your mattress clean and extends its lifespan by years, delaying the need for replacement and reducing waste.

Recycle at End of Life

When your mattress reaches the end of its life, consider a mattress recycling programme rather than sending it to landfill. Many municipalities offer this service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to mattresses that are returned to National Mattress?
Returned mattresses never go to landfill. Depending on their condition, they are either donated to vetted charities and shelters, recycled for materials, or professionally inspected, sanitised, and resold through our Open-Bag collection at discounted prices. All packaging materials are sent to certified recycling facilities.
Are your mattresses made in Canada?
Yes. All of the mattress factories we partner with are located in the Greater Toronto Area. This means shorter delivery distances, lower carbon emissions, and faster lead times. It also means every purchase supports Canadian manufacturing jobs and strengthens domestic supply chains.
What does CertiPUR-US certification mean?
CertiPUR-US is an independent certification programme that verifies foams are made without harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and certain flame retardants. Certified foams are also tested for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, which means better indoor air quality for your home. Every foam mattress at National Mattress uses CertiPUR-US certified foams.
What is an open-bag mattress and is it environmentally friendly?
An open-bag mattress is a product whose original packaging has been opened — it may be a showroom display, a photo-shoot sample, or a customer return. By reselling these mattresses instead of discarding them, we extend their lifecycle and avoid the environmental cost of manufacturing a replacement. Every open-bag mattress is professionally inspected, sanitised, and backed by a full manufacturer's warranty. You can browse our current selection on our Open-Bag collection page.
How much packaging does National Mattress recycle?
We currently divert 90% of our packaging materials — including plastic film, cardboard, and wooden pallets — from landfill through certified recycling facilities. Our goal is to reach 100% packaging diversion by 2027. We audit our diversion rate annually and continuously look for ways to improve.
How can I dispose of my old mattress responsibly?
Many Ontario municipalities offer mattress recycling programmes that break down old mattresses into reusable components like steel, foam, and fabric. You can check with your local waste management authority for options in your area. Using a mattress protector throughout your mattress's life also extends its lifespan significantly, delaying the need for disposal.
Does National Mattress donate mattresses to charity?
Yes. Since 2020, we have donated over 1,200 mattresses to vetted charities, shelters, and newcomer-support organisations across Ontario. Mattresses that are returned in good condition but cannot be resold as open-bag are donated rather than discarded. In addition, every mattress purchase helps fund bed-kits for children in need through Sleeping Children Around the World.
